BMA at Cal Maritime '09

Banning High School and Ballard Maritime Academy participated in the Global Safety and Security program held this summer at Cal Maritime. This 5-day training session allows high school students to participate in STCW Basic Safety Courses including personal survival and firefighting. The program also allows these students to experience the college campus environment in preparation for their future academic goals. This student-produced video captures some of the fun and excitement of this rewarding summer experience!

Dean McNutt Announces New Extended Learning Advisory Board Chairman

Norman Fassler-Katz has been nominated as the new Chairman of the Extended Learning Advisory Board. Mr. Fassler-Katz, who has served as a member of the XL board for some time, is a senior consultant with the Senate Transportation and Sub-Committee on California Ports and Goods Movement. He replaces Holly Osen of Chevron.

New Ballast Water Treatment Evaluation and Certification Facility on The Golden Bear

A combination of $700,000 in grants will fund the creation of a new Ballast Water Treatment Evaluation and Certification facility aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear. The new facility is expected to reduce the time and expense associated with testing and certifying new systems for treatment of ballast water. Such treatments, to avoid the risk of introducing non-native marine organisms when discharging ballast water in foreign ports, are the subject of pending state, national and international standards for ship operators.

The California Maritime Academy and Clearwater Port of Houston, TX, today announced the creation of a joint program to expand West Coast training in the handling and transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG) products.
